A ‘job mela’ organised by Tamil Nadu State Rural Livelihood Mission (TNSRLM) here on Saturday received lukewarm response as just about 800 job seekers turned up and 230 of them secured placements in various private companies.
It was inaugurated by Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare S. Sundararaj in the presence of Collector K. Nanthakumar and MP A. Anwar Raja at Schwartz Higher Secondary School. Though 2,000 candidates were expected to attend the event, only 824 turned up as similar ‘Job melas’ were organised in four other districts, including Virudhunagar and Kanyakumari in the south, M. Jayaraman, Joint Director, TNSRLM, said.
He said 17 companies, including TVS Sri Chakra, Larsen and Toubro, Eureka Forbes, ICICI Academy Skill, Shanmugavalli Mills, Dhan Foundation, Sathyam Bio and Apollo Med Skill participated and recruited 230 candidates with technical expertise. “We expected at least 90 companies, but many could not make it as they had committed to attend the other melas,” he said
This is the first camp for this year and we expect more candidates to turn up in the next camp to be held in November, he said. The companies preferred those candidates who were willing to move out of the district and work at places where the companies were located, he said.
He said textile companies from Coimbatore, Madurai and Tirupur offered food and accommodation to women who joined their companies. Though many engineers and postgraduates turned up at the Mela, the companies preferred those studied up to Plus Two and could be employed in industries and construction sites, he added.
TUV Woodland recruited the maximum of 30 candidates followed by ICICI Academy Skill 25, Eureka Forbes 22, Sakthi Foundation 22 and TVS Sri Chakra 16, he added.
