The Sessions Court for Exclusive Trial of Bomb Blast cases at Poonamallee on Monday sentenced eight members of the defunct Tamizhar Viduthalai Padai to undergo life-imprisonment for attacking Puthur Police Station in the erstwhile South Arcot district in 1991.
Last week the court convicted nine persons, after holding them guilty of offences.
Sentencing eight of them to life-imprisonment on Monday, V. Ramasamy, Judge said: “In this case, all accused trespassed into the police station and attacked indiscriminately with deadly weapons. All the accused entered the station premises as an armed group, indulged in violence resulting in the death of one person and injuries to a few. The common objective of the gang was to murder and all of them shall be convicted under Sections 302 (murder) read with 149 (Being member of unlawful assembly) of Indian Penal Code.”
The court also sentenced Soo alias Sundaram who was cited as accused number one to seven years’ imprisonment for hatching the criminal conspiracy. As he has already undergone the detention of seven years, he was freed.
Around 11 members of ‘Tamizhar Viduthalai Padai’, who were working for a separate Tamil State, assembled at Ayyappanayakanpettai near Kaaduvetti and hatched conspiracy for the purpose of looting the arms and ammunitions from Puthur Police Station, in Cuddalore district. In furtherance of the conspiracy, they attacked the police station in the early hours of February 7, 1991. In the attack, Rajendran, police constable succumbed to multiple injuries while Sundaravadhanam, then Sub-Inspector and three constables suffered grievous injuries. The gang escaped under the cover of darkness.
The CB CID charged Soo alias Sundaram, Venkatesan,Kumar, Nallarasu,Velmurugan, Maran, Subha. Elavarasan for offences of criminal conspiracy, rioting, dacoity, attempt to murder and murder under the various provisions of Indian Penal Code and Arms Act and Explosive Substances Act. During the pendency of the trial, Lenin died, and Elangomani turned approver.
