The accused offered victim a toffee and took her to his shop

The Villupuram police on Thursday arrested a 70-year-old man under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012 on the charge of sexually abusing a five-year-old girl in Villupuram district.

According to the police, the victim, a Class I student, went to a grocery shop near her house. The accused, D. Nagaraj, 70, who runs the grocery shop, offered her a toffee and took her to the back of the shop and sexually assaulted her. The girl’s mother, on finding her missing, called out to her. She heard the girl screaming and spotted the accused fleeing from the spot.

The girl has been admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital at Mundiyambakkam in Villupuram. Nagaraj was arrested and a case was registered against him under Sections 5 and 6 (aggravated sexual assault) of POCSO Act.

CPI protests

Meanwhile, workers of the Communist Party of India (CPI), led by district secretary A.V. Saravanan, staged a demonstration in front of the Villupuram Collectorate on Thursday alleging that the hospital administration had failed to provide proper treatment to the girl.

Mr. Saravanan said the girl was forced to sleep on a mat on the floor in the hospital.
