7 held for gang rape of schoolgirl

The police on Thursday arrested seven persons on charges of rape, illegal confinement and kidnapping of a 15-year-old girl in Vazhapadi here recently.

Police said the girl, who has completed Class 10, left to her relative’s house for admission to Class XI on May 27. However, she did not return home. Her father informed the Vazhapadi police who demanded a written complaint. However, her father refused to give a written complaint.

It is said that the girl was in love with a youth and he lured her to marry her. She also stayed in the house of the lover’s friend. It was there she was raped by her lover and his six friends. On Wednesday, she escaped from the house and informed her father who lodged a complaint with the police.

 Superintendent of Police G. Subbulakshmi held an inquiry with the girl. A medical examination was done on the girl at Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital.

Based on a complaint from her father, the Vazhapadi police registered a case.
