Corporation officials carried out raids in retail shops in the market areas and seized 500 kg of banned plastic materials here on Saturday.

A team consisting City Health Officer R. Selvakumar; and Sanitary Inspectors Suresh, Gopinath, Kandasamy and Ravindran; inspected shops along Cherry Road, VOC Market, Bazaar Street, Chinna Kadai Veedi, First Agraharam and Car Street in the afternoon.

A total of 45 shops were raided.

The shopkeepers were fined Rs. 2,100 for selling the banned items.

Officials said that the raids would continue.

Monitoring

Though the corporation had on January 2013 banned the manufacturing and selling of plastic materials that are less than 40 micron in thickness, the sales of such items were continuing because of poor monitoring by officials concerned.

Companies manufacturing the banned plastic items continue to function, as action is taken only against retailers.
