5 killed, 44 injured in two accidents

Three persons were killed and 16 others injured in an accident involving a maxi-cab and a tipper lorry at Pappanapattu near Vikkiravandi on Sunday.

While proceeding to Chennai, the maxi-cab made a sudden u-turn at Mundiyampakkam after some of the passengers, all members of a family, asked the driver to go to a nearby temple. The tipper lorry on its way to Villupuram hit the maxi-cab.

While S. Kumari (55) of Vandimedu in Villupuram and D. Avinash (12) of Neyveli were killed on the spot, S. Selvi (45), a resident of Vandimedu, died on the way to hospital. Sixteen other occupants of the maxi-cab have been admitted to Mundiyampakkam Government Medical College Hospital, where the condition of one of them is said to be serious.

District Collector V. Sampath rushed to the spot and arranged for rushing the injured to hospital.

Two killed

Staff Reporter from Tirupur writes:

Two persons were killed and 28 injured when a van they were travelling in overturned near Madathukulam early on Sunday.

The victims were identified as C. Periyan (50) and P. Chinnakkannan (50) of Coimbatore district. The injured have been admitted to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital and Government Hospital at Udumalpet.

The accident took place on the Madathukulam- Kaniyur stretch. The van was returning with pilgrims from Palani to Chinnampathi. The police have registered a case.
