Minister for School Education K.A. Sengottaiyan announced on Monday that 318 government schools in Tamil Nadu will be equipped with wi-fi facilities soon.

The School Education department signed an MoU with ACT Fibernet, a private internet service provider, at the Secretariat for the same.

“Through the free wi-fi, we want the students to keep themselves updated with the latest news and be able to access educational resource material online in their schools,” said Mr. Sengottaiyan.

In the first phase of the initiative, 255 schools from Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur educational districts and 63 schools in Coimbatore will be equipped with free wi-fi and the department was planning to enable access to 300 GB of internet a month for each school.

Free laptops

The State government has been distributing free laptops for students of government and government-aided schools and ₹758 crore had been allocated for the distribution of laptops for the 2017-18 academic year.

Mr. Sengottaiyan announced in 2017 that 3,000 smart classrooms would be rolled out across the State involving an outlay of ₹2 lakh each.
