The police rounded up 31 advocates for laying siege to Pasupathypalayam police station in Karur district on Tuesday. While they were being taken to a marriage hall, they got off the police vehicle and staged a road roko.
The root cause of the problem was an altercation involving the kin of a person who got compensation for motor vehicle accident and his advocate relating to the quantum of commission or fee to be paid to the advocate.
It is said that Vadivel had received Rs. 3 lakh as compensation for being injured in a road accident but when the advocate received the cheque and demanded the fee or commission due to him, there arose a quarrel.
The victim’s kin, who included a policeman, had allegedly assaulted the advocate when he gathered some of his fraternity and retaliated with force resulting in a major scuffle.
Later, Vadivel had lodged a complaint against the advocate with the Pasupathypalayam police which initiated action on the complaint.
On Tuesday, advocates came to know about the developments and gathered outside the Pasupathypalayam police station, raised slogans denouncing the police and claimed that they were vitiating the atmosphere.
The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Karur, S.M.Elango, held talks with the agitating advocates but to no avail as they continued their protest.
The police were then rounded up the protesting advocates numbering around 31 and took them to a nearby marriage hall. But on the way, the advocates picked a quarrel with the escorting policemen and got off the vehicle in front of the court complex and resorted to a road roko blocking traffic.
At that juncture, the Superintendent of Police, Santhosh Kumar, District judge Jayasankaran, and Chief Judicial Magistrate Sridhar arrived at the spot and defused the situation that was slipping out of hand.
The issue was settled amicably with Vadivel and his supporters agreeing to settle the amount due to the advocate and the subsequent withdrawal of police complaint.
