Prakasam police achieved a breakthrough in the case pertaining to the murder of a lorry driver from Chennai with the arrest of three fellow lorry drivers, also from Chennai.
Kandukur Circle Inspector M. Lakshman said the accused were nabbed at Verrepalli near Ulavapadu on Chennai-Kolkata highway late on Saturday.
The accused, identified as Kaliamurthy (26), Rajesh Kannan (28) and Manivannan (28) from Red Hills near Chennai, had boarded the lorry carrying steel utensils, at Gummudipoondi on June 6. They struck a deal with lorry driver B. Dayakar (45) to take back the vehicle to Madurai and share the sale proceeds among themselves, the CI said. However, Dayakar, on second thoughts, did not agree to the deal.
After an altercation, one of them slit Dayakar’s throat, while the other two strangled him.
On seeing a police party, they abandoned the lorry and fled the scene, leaving the knife and the blood-stained towel behind, which proved useful in unravelling the case, the CI said.
