Two persons were killed on the spot and five others injured when an explosive material went off at Keezhanilaikottai near Aranthangi in Pudukottai district on Sunday.

The incident happened when one of the workers dropped a gunny bag with explosive material used for making country bombs.

When it exploded, two workers — P. Arumugam (50) and V. Vellaiammal (32) — were blown into pieces. In the impact, some explosive material fell into an adjoining storage room.

The tiles on the roof of the storage room were damaged.

Five workers — K. Malliga (55), P. Vijayalakshmi (35), S. Selvi (40), S. Jayalakshmi (37) and B. Kishore — were injured.

J. Loganathan, Superintendent of Police, said the injured persons were admitted to Aranthangi Government Hospital, from where they were referred to Thanjavur Medical College and Hospital. Sources said the material was meant for making fireworks for temple festivals.

The police have registered a case under the Explosive Act and are investigating.
