A 16-year-old boy and a 58-year-old man drowned in the swimming pool of a hotel at the foothills of Maruthamalai in Coimbatore on Monday.

The police identified the deceased as M. Devaraj from Vedappatti, security guard of the swimming pool attached to Pothigai Residency at Maruthamalai, and P. Anbuselvan, a class XI student from Indira Nagar near Vadavalli. The incident happened around 11.30 a.m. on Monday when Anbuselvan and four friends went for a swim in the pool.

They started swimming in the four-ft deep area of the pool. After a while, Anbuselvan and another friend moved to seven-ft deep area and found difficult to hold themselves floating in the water. As the duo started to sink, others shouted for help.

Devaraj jumped into the pool and saved Anbuselvan’s friend. However, Devaraj and Anbuselvan were exhausted and drowned.

The Vadavalli police have registered a case against the management of the hotel. They said the swimming pool did not have a trainer, life jackets, and caution boards.
