April 10, 2013 03:05 am | Updated 03:05 am IST - CHENNAI:

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday told the Assembly that her government would appoint 16,726 conservancy workers for the village panchayats.

Making a suo motu statement, she said the decision followed lack of adequate conservancy workers proportionate to the population. At present, there were only 9,896 conservancy workers.

The newly appointed workers would get a consolidated salary of Rs 2,000 per month and Rs. 40 as dearness allowance. It will cost the government Rs. 41.81 crore per year.

The Chief Minister also hiked the amount for construction of solar-powered Green Houses taking into consideration the increase in the price of construction material and solar panel. The amount would be increased to Rs 2.10 lakh from Rs 1.80 lakh from 2013-14.

Similarly, the amount for Indira Memorial Housing Scheme would be increased to Rs 1.20 lakh. Ms. Jayalalithaa said a special scheme would be devised at a cost of Rs 100 crore for solid and liquid waste management in rural areas. Villages panchayats with over 500 families could use up to Rs 20 lakh under the scheme. “I expect the Centre to allot the fund,” she said. The Chief Minister said her government had decided to implement solar energy facilities in 12,524 village panchayats and 385 panchayat unions.
