: At least 15 persons, mostly bystanders, sustained injuries during the jallikattu event held at Malathankulam, Sannavur and Pudukottai villages in Ariyalur district on Sunday.

A large number of enthusiastic people, including bull tamers, participated in the events held after the State government promulgated an ordinance that cleared the hurdles for the conduct of the sport.

Bulls were initially released in Sannavur and Pudukottai in the presence of senior officials and police personnel. The event held at Malathankulam near Thirumanur block attracted huge crowd from neighbouring villages.

Collector E. Saravanavelraj told The Hindu that a team of veterinary doctors examined the bulls for intoxication or drugging. The fitness of bulls was also examined.

Treatment for the injured

Injured persons were given immediate treatment by the medical teams camped in the villages. “The events passed off peacefully. Veterinarians tested all the bulls before they were released from entry points. The injured were treated immediately,” he said.
