A total of 1,364 school dropouts and child labourers had been rescued and readmitted to the special schools in the district during this year, Collector M. Karunakaran said.

Inaugurating the ‘Anti-Child Labour Signature Campaign’ at St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School in Palayamkottai on Monday, Dr. Karunakaran said some of the poor parents, in a bid to augment the family’s income, send their children to workplaces, which should be avoided at any cost.

When the recent survey conducted by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) revealed that 1,364 children in the district had discontinued their studies and some of them had become child labourers, all of them had been rescued and readmitted to the 15 special schools meant for them.

“Having formal school education is the birth right of every child. To create awareness among the parents of the demerits of child labour system, we’re organizing the signature campaign and more events like awareness rallies, sports meets and cultural events are on the pipeline. Realising the necessity for providing good education, the parents should admit their children to schools,” Dr. Karunakaran appealed.

Project Director of National Child Labour Project Chandrakumar, Deputy Director of Industrial Safety and Health, Ravikumar, Inspector of Labour Sudalairaj, and others participated.
