11 fishermen detained in Maldives released

Following the intervention of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, 11 fishermen from Tamil Nadu detained by the Maldivian authorities have been released.

The fishermen are from Kanyakumari district and are expected to return home in a couple of days. An official release said the fishermen from Iraviputhanthurai village in the Kanyakumari district went fishing in the Arabian Sea last week.

Due to a snag, the boat drifted into the waters of Maldives. Information reached here that the Coast Guard officials of the Maldives secured the fishermen along with their boat. Following this, the Chief Minister asked officials to contact officials in the Union External Affairs Ministry and requested them to release the innocent fishermen through the Indian embassy in Maldives.

In view of the State government's request, the Maldivian officials have not filed any case against the fishermen from Tamil Nadu. They were not taken to the capital of Maldives and instead released from Kuldhufushi, an island in the country. The fishermen are expected to reach the State in a couple of days, the release added.
