Tamil Nadu man arrested for conning youth in Odisha

A middleman from Tamil Nadu, who had allegedly conned 80 persons of over ₹40 lakh in the name of providing jobs in Sri Lanka, was arrested by police in Odisha’s Ganjam district. According to officials, L. Ramkumar, through a local youth, had lured around 80 persons to apply for jobs in Colombo.

According to police sources, L. Ramkumar, the arrested person, was from Tamil Nadu. He was rounded up by the police on Sunday while he had come to Langaleswar village. According to Inspector in-charge of Khallikote police station Satya Ranjan Pradhan, through a local youth, the man had lured around 80 youths of Langaleswar and the adjoining areas to apply for jobs in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Under the guise of arranging jobs for the youths in a construction firm, the arrested man had collected over ₹50,000 from each of them, police said. Although the youths were promised jobs for a period of two years, they were sent to Sri Lanka on a two-month-long tourist visa, said officials. On reaching Colombo, the youths found that instead of a lucrative wage they may not get minimum wage there.

Hence, they had returned and lodged a complaint at Khallikote police station.
