Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Karnataka cumulatively account for 85.51% of the new COVID-19 cases reported in the past 24 hours, with the country reporting 17,407 new cases and 89 deaths during this time, said a release issued by the Health Ministry on Thursday. The Ministry added that the total number of cases with the U.K., South Africa and Brazil variants of the COVID-19 virus in the country as on date is 242.
Maharashtra has reported the highest daily new cases at 9,855. This is the highest number recorded in Maharashtra since October 18, when 10,259 new cases were reported. It is followed by Kerala with 2,765 new cases, while Punjab reported 772 new cases.
The Ministry in its release added that six States account for 88.76% of the new deaths. Maharashtra saw the highest casualties (42). Kerala follows with 15 deaths and Punjab reported 12 deaths in the last 24 hours. In all, 23 States/UTs, including Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Goa, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Puducherry, have not reported any COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours.

India’s total active COVID-19 caseload is currently 1,73,413, and Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh are showing a rise in active cases.
“Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar and Assam show a reduction in the active cases in the last 24 hours. On the other hand, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Gujarat display a rise in the active cases during the same time period,” the Ministry said in its release.
