Anand Sharma, on his visit to South Africa, met Ramaphosa in Johannesburg and they also shared their views regarding the national elections in the two countries as well as global political trends

South African president Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed that his country desires peace and tranquility in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) region, said Congress leader Anand Sharma on Monday after meeting him in Johannesburg.

The discussion on Jammu and Kashmir came up when Mr. Sharma, the deputy leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP), called on President Ramaphosa at the African National Congress (ANC) headquarters.

President Ramaphosa also referred to regional conflicts and tensions in different parts of the world that pose a threat to peace and stability and a challenge for the global leadership.

In his meeting with the South African President, Mr. Sharma is learnt to have described J&K as an entirely internal issue of India, but shared the resolution adopted by the Congress Working Committee (CWC).

The CWC had sharply criticised the manner in which special status for J&K under Article 370 was abrogated.

The two leaders also shared their views regarding the national elections in the two countries as well as global political trends, said a statement issued by Mr. Sharma.

The South African president expressed concern over the global economic slowdown resulting in high youth unemployment and adversely affecting social security.

Mr. Sharma also conveyed a message of greetings from Congress President Sonia Gandhi to the ANC leadership.

Mr. Sharma will deliver a lecture at South African Institute of International Affairs on Wednesday and engage with academia and think tanks during his visit, said the Congress party.

The two political parties, ANC and the Indian National Congress (INC) share close political relations since pre-Independence days and undertake exchanges of political delegation.
