A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan and an Army man were killed in Pakistani firing along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu’s Rajouri and Kashmir’s Kupwara districts on Thursday.

“Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire agreement in Kupwara’s Machil around 10.45 a.m. on Thursday. Our troops retaliated strongly. However, one soldier died in the Pakistani firing,” said a Srinagar-based Army spokesman.

The fresh skirmishes come just a day after two soldiers were injured in Pakistani firing in Baramulla’s Uri Sector.

An official said Pakistan resorted to fresh shelling around 9:30 a.m. on Thursday and damaged the structures of a civilian, Hakem Ali Mir, a resident of Batar Kundibarja Uri.

“The shelling on both sides continued till 11 a.m.,” said a local.

In Jammu’s Rajouri, a BSF spokesman said Pakistani troops fired upon Indian installations along the LoC around 3.50 p.m., especially in Sunderbani area.

“During effective retaliation at 4.30 p.m., two personnel of BSF’s 126 Batallion were injured and were evacuated to a hospital for treatment. One jawan, Paranjit Biswas, succumbed to the injuries,” said the spokesman.

Pakistan used both small arms and shells to target Indian posts in Rajouri, said an official.

Pakistan violated the ceasefire agreement over 1,432 times on the LoC and International Border in J&K this year, killing 59 security personnel and civilians.

LoC trade halted

Due to flare-up in the tension on the LoC, officials disallowed movement of trucks between Kashmir and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on Thursday in Baramulla.

“Since the area of shelling is close to Kaman Post, we decided to suspend trade,” said Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Uri, Baseer-ul-Haque.
