The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Wednesday sought a report on shifting of incarcerated JKLF chief Yasin Malik from Kashmir to New Delhi’s Tihar Jail.
Hearing a petition, SHRC chairperson Justice Bilal Nazki issued notices to the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Secretary, the Commissioner Secretary of the Home department and the Director General of Police and sought “a detailed compliance” on the detention and the shifting of Mr. Malik to the National Investigation Agency custody.
Ahsan Untoo, chairman of the International Forum for Justice Human Rights, pleaded before the SHRC that Mr. Malik “was a political worker and was detained under the Public Safety Act [PSA] and later handed over to the NIA illegally.”
“The authorities illegally allowed the police to change the custody, which is otherwise illegal in nature and handed over the custody to the NIA,” Mr. Untoo said in the plea.
Mr. Untoo pleaded before the SHRC that Mr. Malik’s health condition was unknown and the family members and friends were not allowed to interact or to get the health information of the separatist leader.
The NIA got 13-day custody of Mr. Malik on April 10 in a terror-funding case. Earlier, the 53-year-old was booked under the PSA on March 7 and later was brought from Kot Bhalwal Jail, Jammu, to Tihar Jail in Delhi.
