Srinagar: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has sought a detailed report on the allegations of the maltreatment of prisoners at the Central Jail, Srinagar, after reports emerged that its inmates have gone on a hunger strike.

SHRC chairperson Bilal Nazki has directed Principal Secretary, Home Department, to facilitate the visit of a team of the SHRC headed by its member Abdul Hamid Wani. “The team will submit a detailed report before the commission,” said a SHRC official.

The SHRC move comes after a petition filed by International Forum for Justice Human Rights chairman Ahsan Untoo claimed maltreatment of the prisoners after Lashkar-e-Taiba’s militant Naveed Jatt managed to escape from the jail on February 6 this year.
