Show restraint, journalists told

The government on Tuesday asked journalists to exercise restraint while seeking to cover the situation in Iraq and especially while making bids to contact Indian nationals caught in conflict zone.

“They [Iraqi authorities] have requested me to request you to stop trying to contact the nurses on phone, wanting to know hour by hour information even while they are caught in a conflict zone in Tikrit. They have requested me to let you know that you are endangering the lives of those Indians,” said External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin here.

“They find it extremely intrusive, extremely disconcerting [and have] requested that [journalists] please back off lest [they should] jeopardise the lives of Indian nationals,” he said.

The government requested the media to not go by hearsay and not base their reportage on second-hand information.
