As reports emerged that Karnataka resident Shafi Armar had been killed in a strike in Syria’s Baghuz, top intelligence and security officials said there was “no confirmation from any quarter.”

Baghuz is one of the last IS bastions that has seen a major offensive by the U.S.-backed Syrian forces since early March.

A former Indian Mujahideen (IM) member, Shafi Armar left for Pakistan via Dubai along with his brother Mohammad Sultan Armar in 2008.

On March 20, a U.S.- based security analyst with a television news channel tweeted that a “fighter Yousef al-Hindi, aka Indian national Shafi Armar, was killed in Baghuz.

“We do not have any confirmation on his death,” a top intelligence official told The Hindu .
