Several persons, including policemen, were injured as Trinamool Congress and BJP supporters clashed in Agartala on Monday evening.

Subal Bhowmik, BJP’s vice-president in Tripura, sustained injuries, and his vehicle was smashed near the West Agartala police station. Prohibitory orders were imposed in the city and security men were deployed in large numbers in the area.

Trouble broke out after BJP supporters blocked the road outside the police station, demanding the arrest of the elder brother of TMC leader Sudip Roy Barman, who had allegedly roughed up a BJP leader.

Mr. Bhowmik, who was leading the protest, was injured as BJP and Trinamool Congress workers attacked each other.

TMC women’s wing leader Panna Deb was also injured.

Tension prevailed in several areas of the city as supporters of both parties refused to disperse. Senior officials were monitoring the situation.
