The Rajasthan Congress chief is leading the public campaign for ouster of Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje for her alleged links with former IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi.

The Lalit Modi controversy and the Vyapam scam allegedly involving BJP leaders have taken the mask off Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s claim of corruption-free governance, said Rajasthan Congress chief and former Union Minister Sachin Pilot.

Mr. Pilot, who was briefly in New Delhi after a public campaign in Rajasthan, told The Hindu in an exclusive interview: “The Prime Minister claimed at his Mathura rally [on May 25, when the NDA government completed one year in office] that his achievement was one year of corruption-free governance. These scams have unmasked that claim.”

The Rajasthan Congress chief is leading the public campaign for ouster of Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje for her alleged links with former IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi — wanted by the Enforcement Directorate — and aiding his immigration to the U.K. The campaign will cover all 33 districts in the State. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will also join the campaign, during his two-day visit to the State beginning July 16, less than a week before Parliament meets for the monsoon session.

‘Multiple violations’

Mr. Pilot said the State Congress had already approached the Rajasthan Governor for a meeting and is waiting for a response. Asked if the Lalit Modi issue was likely to stall Parliament, he said: “We will do whatever is within our power to raise this issue. They have transgressed the law and done so with impunity.”

“She [Ms. Raje] has no other option but to resign because every day new facts are disclosed by none other than Lalit Modi. There are multiple violations,” Mr. Pilot said.

‘Deafening silence’

“The BJP is maintaining a deafening silence… A true test of leadership comes when you are in power and you can take action against your own people who have broken the law,” he said.

Countering the BJP’s charge that Mr. Modi left India during the UPA’s time, he said: “The reason he escaped the country was because we were pursuing him diligently. When the UPA was in power for four years, he was confined to the U.K. Lalit Modi’s fortunes turned because Narendra Modi came to power.”
