Sasikala, others move SC for bail

Updated - November 28, 2021 07:39 am IST - NEW DELHI

A day after former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa moved the Supreme Court, three co-accused in the disproportionate assets case — Sasikala Natarajan, V. Sudhakaran and J. Elavarasi — followed suit on Friday, seeking suspension of their sentences and grant of bail.

Their petitions were dismissed by the Karnataka High Court, along with that of Ms. Jayalalithaa’s, on October 7.

The co-accused were sentenced to four years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 10 crore each. The trial court had found that the three acted as ‘benamis’ of Ms. Jayalalithaa by holding her assets, thus holding them also guilty under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The petitions are likely to be mentioned on Monday in the Supreme Court for an early hearing on Tuesday.
