The CBI on Thursday filed a supplementary charge sheet in the Adarsh scam case, naming businessman Abhay Sancheti, the late politician Kanhaiyalal Gidwani, and Major-General (retd.) T.K. Kaul as accused.

Abhay Sancheti is the brother of the BJP’s Rajya Sabha member Ajay Sancheti. The Sancheti family is considered close to BJP leader Nitin Gadkari. The charge sheet gives details of the CBI’s probe into the benami transactions. The Bombay High Court had directed the agency to probe the transactions.

According to CBI sources, nine flats were funded through benami transactions by Mr. Sancheti’s firm San Finance Corporation Ltd. Seven flats were funded through such transactions by Mr. Gidwani and two by Mr. Kaul.

“San Finance had granted loans to nine flat owners. We found out that none of them was able to explain their source of funding to purchase the flats,” sources in the agency told The Hindu .

The CBI is still probing the alleged benami transaction of the remaining 81 members , including the two relatives of the former Maharashtra Chief Minister, Ashok Chavan.
