Rajya Sabha adjourned yet again

December 28, 2018 09:32 pm | Updated 09:32 pm IST - NEW DELHI

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the second consecutive day on Friday amid protests.

Soon after the papers were tabled, AIADMK members gathered in the well, shouting slogans over the Cauvery issue. Similar scenes unfolded on Thursday when some members from Andhra Pradesh joined the protest, demanding special status for the State.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Vijay Goel said the government was willing to discuss all issues. He urged that the House be allowed to work smoothly as only seven working days were left this session and all Bills, including the one on triple talaq, had to be taken up.

Appeal goes in vain

The Chairman said he had allowed discussion on all issues, and the government was ready for a debate. He repeatedly requested the members to go back to their seats. “I don’t want these kinds of ugly scenes to be seen by the countrymen… I appeal to all of you to go to your seats,” he said, adding “We have to take some action.”

As the protests continued, the House was adjourned for the day.

Earlier, when the Rajya Sabha convened, SAD member Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa said the House should pay homage to the four martyred sons of Guru Gobind Singh. The Chairman said the House was in accord with his sentiments as the sons of the 10th Sikh Guru displayed exemplary courage. The members extended birthday wishes to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and former Defence Minister A.K. Antony.
