Over 1.84 lakh people stranded in the flood-hit areas of Jammu and Kashmir have been rescued so far by the armed forces and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

A total of 224 boats of the Army and 148 inflated boats of the NDRF are conducting rescue operations.

With life limping back to normality in the State, the Centre, as part of the relief and rehabilitation plan, has made arrangements for 13 tonnes of water purifying tablets and six water-filtration plants.

Over 5 lakh litres of water, 3 lakh food packets and over 1,054 tonnes of cooked food have already been airdropped and distributed.

Engineering stores, including suction pumps from Visakhapatnam, have reached the flood-affected areas. Heavy duty pumps have been airlifted from Jodhpur and Raipur, whereas sewage pumps have been dispatched from Delhi.

The government is taking all measures to restore power supply to the worst-hit parts of Srinagar.

“Thirty generator sets of 3-5 KVA capacity have been sent to Srinagar to augment power supply in relief camps and field hospitals. Additional communication equipment of BSNL are being sent to restore the communication systems,” said an official.

The Border Roads Organisation has restored the road connectivity from Batote to Anantnag and Srinagar to Sonamarg.

The Srinagar-Baramulla Road stretch is now open for light vehicles. On the Jammu-Srinagar highway, BRO personnel have cleared the road up to 172 km.

Eighty teams of the Armed Forces Medical Services are operating round-the-clock to attend to the victims, including children and the elderly. The government has also set up four field hospitals at Avantipur, Pattan, Anantnag and Old Airfield. Two additional fully equipped field hospitals with laboratory testing equipment facility have been established in Srinagar. Relief materials including blankets and tents, water bottles from IRCTC and food packets are being airlifted from Patna, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Amritsar.

The Air Force and the Army Aviation Corps have pressed into service 84 transport aircraft and helicopters for the rescue and relief operations.

“In the Srinagar region, Army relief camps have been established at BB Cantt, Avantipur, Old Airfield, Sumbal, Chattargam and Jijamata Mandir, where thousands of rescued people are being sheltered. They are also being provided with food and other basic amenities,” said the official.
