Even as Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi is at the receiving end of attacks by BJP leader Narendra Modi, he came in for praise from his estranged cousin and BJP general secretary Varun Gandhi.

In a video clip, Mr. Varun Gandhi is heard telling a group of teachers in Sultanpur on Tuesday that Mr. Rahul Gandhi had done good work for empowerment of women in Amethi.

Mr. Rahul Gandhi, who was in Rae Bareli, welcomed the comments, saying: “Whatever Varun has said is correct. I am happy people appreciate the work we have done.”

Later, Mr. Varun Gandhi clarified that his comments were not an “endorsement” of the candidature of Mr. Rahul Gandhi or the Congress. “My comment, in response to being asked whether I knew about the initiatives in Amethi, was that although I had not seen the work done, I had heard it was fairly decent. It should NOT be seen as an endorsement of any political party or candidate,” he tweeted.
