After 20 days of intense questioning when he was in police custody, Mehdi Masroor Biswas was sent to Bangalore Central Prison on Friday after a city court remanded him in 14-day judicial custody.

While investigators had earlier specifically sought and got the court’s permission to take Mehdi to other cities like Mumbai to probe his possible “real world links”, they had neither taken taken him out of the city nor had sought extension of his custody on Friday. City Police Commissioner M.N. Reddi said they had kept their options open and would seek Mehdi’s police custody as and when required.

Mr. Reddi said they had accessed private direct messages with an anonymous account suspected to be of one of the three youths of Kalyan, who is suspected to be on the frontlines of IS. The content of the direct messages with this particular account holder was like “an advice and guidance to the man and instigating him to take up the fight”.

Senior officials involved in the probe told The Hindu that Mehdi was still evasive and had not given the passwords to the three e-mail accounts other than elsaltador@gmail.com, which they suspect was also part of his virtual footprint. The official said they had sought the help of Google to access the three accounts. He added that while they had accessed nearly 12,000 plus private direct messages of the nearly 14,000 direct messages transacted from his Twitter account, Mehdi has deleted about 2,000 messages. Police have now written again to Twitter seeking access to the deleted messages.
