Probe murder of Deendayal Upadhyaya afresh: Swamy

Senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to set up a multi-disciplinary special investigation team to probe the 1968 murder of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya afresh.

On a day when Mr. Modi kick-started the first of the 200 rallies to mark the BJP’s first anniversary in power at the birthplace of the Jana Sangh ideologue in Mathura, Dr. Swamy expressed doubts about the investigations conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation into his murder.

“Deendayalji was killed while he was travelling by train from Lucknow to Patna. It was claimed, in a cover-up investigation by the CBI headed by the then DIG John Lobo, that he had been pushed out by robbers just before the train entered the Mughalsarai station. Close associates of Deendayalji, such as Nanaji Deshmukh and Dattopant Thengadi, never accepted this finding,” said Dr. Swamy.

The BJP leader said his sources in the Union Home Ministry told him that the coach the Jana Sangh leader was travelling in did not have a single co-passenger with a genuine identification or address. “All had fake addresses and IDs. This fact, if corroborated, is enough reason to reopen the case, since it is then an assassination — a murder with a political motive.”

The CBI arrested two persons, Ram Awadh and Bharat Lal. According to the agency, the duo confessed to pushing the Jana Sangh leader out of the train when he caught them stealing his bag and threatened to report to the police. However, they were acquitted for want of evidence.
