Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed for peace in Gujarat on Wednesday, but top government sources told The Hindu that the Centre had decided, for the moment, to leave it to the Anandiben Patel government to handle the situation, stressing that law and order is a state subject.
Of course, the Centre has sent in the Army and paramilitary forces to help the local police, and is watching the situation keenly.
As curfew was clamped in several parts of the State after a police baton-charge triggered off violence and deaths, Mr. Modi appealed on television for calm in Gujarat, saying all issues could be resolved peacefully through discussions. Speaking in Gujarati, he said, “I appeal to all brothers and sisters of Gujarat that they should not resort to violence. The only ‘Mantra’ must be ‘Shanti’ (peace).” The government, he said, is committed to the welfare of all people. He stressed that all issues could be resolved through discussions.
