PM has a lot to hide: CPI(M)

Calls removal of CBI chief Alok Verma a coup by the government

The Left parties strongly condemned the decision taken by the select committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to shunt out CBI chief Alok Verma within 48 hours of his reinstatement by the Supreme Court.on Thursday night.

Mr. Verma, who was re-assigned as Director General of Fire Services, resigned on Friday afternoon.

The CPI(M) politburo called it a second coup by the BJP government. “The Modi government, through this action, also seeks to prevent its skeletons from tumbling out of the cupboard,” a politburo statement said.

Clearly, the Modi government has a lot to hide, the CPI(M) said.

“This action by the PM Modi overriding a strong dissent and not giving an opportunity to Alok Verma to defend himself against the CVC report is clearly an attempt to prevent the exposure of cronyism, corruption and compromising national security that have emerged against the highest levels of this government,” the statement added.

The CPI (M) has also called the Central Vigilance Commissioner’s report on Mr Verma as “unverified an questionable”. Mr Verma was removed on midnight orders of October 23.

“People of India have seen through this charade and will give a fitting rebuff to the BJP/NDA in the forthcoming general elections,” the Polit Bureau said.

Communist Party of India MP D Raja also labelled the move as “suspect”. “He was shunted out within 48-hours of being reinstated. If there were serious allegations against him then why was he given another top level position? Something unconvincing and unjustifiable is going on,” Mr Raja said. The biggest question before the Indian democracy today, is how to restore the credibility of CBI, he added.
