Warning Pakistan against carrying out a “proxy war” along the border, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday said Indian security forces were responding appropriately and the results would be visible within six months.

“The government is very clear about what is happening [in Jammu and Kashmir]...We have taken a stand. I don’t want to tell you exactly what action we are taking...You will be able to see the difference in six months in actual figures,” he told journalists here. One difference was already visible because this year the number of terrorists neutralised was almost 65-70 per cent more than last year, he noted.

Stressing that for any dialogue, Pakistan first needed to stop ceasefire violations and intrusion of terrorists, Mr. Parrikar said: “We want peace with our neighbours... But if there is an attempt at a proxy war, we will take some proactive steps.” Asked what kind of steps the government was taking, he said: “We will ensure that the enemy doesn’t show any interest in proxy war or the interest comes down.”
