Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha saw disruption and adjournments on Monday.

In the Lok Sabha, MPs of the Congress and the ruling BJP pushed and shoved each other over the Opposition’s insistence that Home Minister Amit Shah should resign, taking responsibility for last week’s  riots in Delhi .

Delhi riots discussion on, but after Holi: LS Speaker

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, in the midst of the ruckus, says  the government is ready to hold discussions on issue of Delhi violence, but only after Holi next week. The shouting never stops and Mr Birla points to a few MPs and sternly asks them to be seated.

The House has been adjourned for the day.

RS adjourned till 3 p.m.

Rajya Sabha has been adjourned till 3 p.m after the Opposition asked for a discussion on riots in Delhi, while the Central Sanskrit Universities Bill was being discussed.

Deputy Chairperson Harivansh is in the Chair. Opposition members raise slogans. The Chair requests order and asks members to lay papers on the table.

The Chair takes up Central Sanksrit University Bill, 2019. Kahkashan Perween (JD-U) speaks in favour of the Bill. Her speech is disrupted.

Leader of House Thaawarchand Gehlot says Delhi is peaceful for the past four days. "We are ready for a debate," he says. Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad says Centre is giving conflicting replies on the Delhi violence. As he speaks, the House is adjourned till 3 pm.

 

LS Speaker asks floor leaders of parties to resolve issues that led to scuffle between Congress, BJP MPs

Speaker Om Birla has asked floor leaders of all parties to resolve the issues that led to a scuffle between Congress and BJP MPs in Lok Sabha and warned that a repeat of what happened on Monday could lead to serious consequences.

Mr. Birla chaired a meeting with the floor leaders of all parties to end the logjam over the Delhi violence issue and told them to resolve the matter, saying otherwise he would be forced to take action.

The House has been adjourned till 2 pm.

Question Hour begins.

The Opposition protests over the issue of Delhi violence, seeking discussion on the matter. Mr. Birla says discussion would be allowed after completion of Question Hour.

Mr. Birla says members from Opposition and Treasury Benches who cross over to the other side during the time of uproar in the House will be suspended for the session.

Leader of Opposition in the House, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, attempts to raise the issue, saying "we (MPs) are representatives of the common people".

Pralhad Joshi, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, accuses Mr. Chowdhury of not wanting to run the House, saying discussion on the Finance Bill was the House's imperative.

The House is adjourned till 12 pm.

Rajya Sabha proceedings adjourned till 2 pm after Opposition, Treasury Benches indulge in war of words over alleged hate speech by BJP MP Anurag Thakur and the issue of Delhi violence.

 

Modi speaks on need for peace

Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a meeting of BJP MPs said " Vikas is our mantra; peace, unity and harmony are prerequisites for development."

He added that all MPs should take lead in ensuring peace, harmony and unity in society.

He said political interests are “supreme” for some parties but for the BJP, “national interest is above everything“.
