For the fifth day, both Houses of parliament was adjourned for the day on Monday without transacting any major business as the opposition parties and some members of the ruling party stalled the proceedings on variety of issues including the government’s decision to allow 51 per cent FDI in the multi-brand retail trade, the Telangana and the Mullai Periyar.
In the Lok Sabha, as the opposition members and those from the Congress ( belonging to the Telangana region) assembled in the well of the House and continued with slogan shouting in support of their respective demands, Deputy Speaker Karia Munda, who was in the Chair, announced that all the notices of adjournment motion were under the consideration of Speaker Meira Kumar. She would take a decision in due course, he said.
However, the opposition members were not pleased with this and they continued to be on their feet which forced the Chair to adjourn Lok Sabha for the day.
The BJP and the CPI (M) were among the parties which had given notices for the adjournment motion on the FDI issue.
The same situation was witnessed in the Rajya Sabha too forcing two adjournments before it was adjourned for the day by Deputy Chairman K. Rahman Khan.
Earlier, Leader of the Opposition Arun Jaitley unsuccessfully attempted to say something. As the din continued, Mr. Khan adjourned the House for the day.
Interestingly members of the Trinamool Congress, an ally of the UPA, too joined the opposition bandwagon in opposing the “FDI in retail sector†decision of the government forcing adjournment in both the Houses.
Earlier, Lok Sabha paid homage to those who had lost their lives in the 26/11 terrorist attack in Mumbai on December 26, 2008, and members observed a minute silence as a mark of respect to the deceased.
