Panel fails to adopt report on Doklam

For two consecutive times, the parliamentary panel on External Affairs has failed to adopt a report on the recent Doklam crisis, allegedly because of protests from BJP members in the committee.

The report, according to the sources, shows the contradictory stand of the Defence Ministry and the External Affairs Ministry on the Doklam crisis. At least two members said that during the deposition in front of the panel, the defence establishment spoke about the build up at Doklam on both sides of the border and claims that the crisis was solved due to pressure from the Indian Army. The mandarins at the External Affairs Ministry paint an entirely different picture claiming that the issue was diplomatically resolved.

The report is also critical of the way the government handled the crisis giving leeway to the Chinese government.

The panel is headed by former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor and also has Congress president Rahul Gandhi as a member. The panel has been working on the report for over a year and wished to submit it during the monsoon session which ends on Friday.
