Former Finance Minister endorses call for smaller families, respecting wealth creators and ban on use of single-use plastic

Former Union Minister P. Chidambaram on Friday endorsed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to have smaller families, respect wealth creators and ban the use of single-use plastic.

In his first Independence Day speech after being re-elected for a second term, Mr. Modi had spelt out his social charter from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

“All of us must welcome three announcements made by the PM on I-Day.

> Small family is a patriotic duty

> Respect wealth creators

> Shun single-use plastic,” tweeted Mr. Chidambaram.

Advice for Finance Minister

The former Finance Minister said that while population control and ban on plastic usage should become a people’s movement, he had an advice for the Finance Minister on respecting wealth creators.

“Of the three exhortations, I hope the FM and her legion of tax officials and investigators heard the PM’s second exhortation loud and clear,” he said.

Mr. Chidambaram’s comments on tax officials vis-a-vis wealth creators is a not-so-subtle reference to growing voices within India Inc. about harassment from tax authorities, triggered by the suicide of Cafe Coffee Day founder V.G. Siddhartha who had blamed tax officials in a note.

Sentiment booster: CII

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), too described the PM’s comments as a ‘sentiment booster’.

“In the last one year, the Hon’ble PM has repeatedly mentioned that he stands firmly with the wealth creators of the country. At a time, when building trust has become so important for industry – with society and with government, the repeat endorsements from the Prime Minister of the country are huge sentiment boosters,” said Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General of CII, in a statement.

“At CII, we believe that Industry plays a critical role in nation-building and that recognition helps. We shall continue to advocate for wealth creation through equal attention to the planet, people and profits, that is — the triple bottom line approach,” Mr. Banerjee added.

On Thursday, most Opposition leaders refrained from the common practice of commenting on the Prime Minister’s speech.

The official twitter handle of the Congress, though, had taken a dig at the Prime Minister’s speech.

“Today Modiji can proudly call India a $3trillion economy because of the sustained efforts of Indians, the prudent five year plans & the success of previous govts. Basically, the economy was handed over to Modi on a silver platter and he still managed to ruin it,”said the Congress handle with the hashtag ‘ModiLiesAtRedFort’.
