The police have denied that an eye of the woman, who died on Saturday last after she was assaulted and allegedly raped the day before in Lakhimpur district of Assam, was gouged out, as reported in the media

Superintendent of Police of the district P.K. Bhuyan said preliminary investigation confirmed that the woman was travelling in a tempo and was found lying along the national highway, about two kilometres from the place she had boarded the vehicle.

“Someone informed us about the injured woman lying on the roadside and an ambulance of 108 was rushed. She was admitted to the Lakhimpur Civil hospital and the same night she was taken to Guwahati for treatment where she unfortunately died of her injuries.

Different organisations in Lakhimpur continued to protest over the incident for the fifth consecutive day on Wednesday. They demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits and capital punishment for “rapists and murderers.”

The Assam State Commission for Women has registered a case and started a probe.
