Days after a woman was brutally attacked in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, a widow was stripped, tied to a tree and tortured by a group of armed men in South 24 Parganas district.
The men are allegedly associated with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and managed to obtain bail on Monday, within 24 hours of the incident.
The victim, a 40-year-old widow with a son – was picked up from her house in Maipith village of Kultali block on Sunday afternoon. The miscreants stripped her and used her saree to tie her to a tree. “She was molested...tortured and went unconscious,” said Latika Thakur, an eyewitness.
The women of the village came together to protest and “virtually chased” the miscreants away. Two persons were arrested later at night but managed to obtain bail.
Former minister and CPI(M) leader Kanti Ganguly rushed to the spot and met the woman late on Sunday. “I have seen the video clip in mobile and can tell you that she was most brutally tortured,” said Mr. Ganguly. “The vivtim was not a member of any political party. “She used to protest against the misdeeds in the area and that is one reason why she was tortured by the TMC goons,” he said.
Local TMC leaders condemned the incident and also demanded “proper punishment” for the miscreants.
The incident comes days after an attack on a woman in >Birbhum district. The woman had alleged that a police team accompanied by local TMC leaders had taken her to a nearby forest on January 17 and tortured her to extract information about her nephew, a local BJP leader.
