A 25-year-old woman died after being pushed out of a moving train allegedly by a Railway Protection Force constable, the police said on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night at the Varanasi railway station when an RPF constable allegedly pushed Rita Pal and her brother Jaidev out of the moving train after they refused to pay him money, O. P. Singh, Circle Officer of GRP, Allahabad, said.

The constable allegedly snatched Rs.3,500 from them, he added.

A seriously injured Ms. Pal was taken to a government hospital where she died on the same night, Mr. Singh said, adding that Jaidev suffered minor injuries.

Ms. Pal, along with her 18-month-old daughter Kajal, Jaidev and uncle Manik Pal, was travelling from Howrah to Kanpur by Durgiana Express to meet her husband. They hail from Birbhum district in West Bengal.

According to the complaint lodged by Manik Pal, a man in police uniform entered their compartment and tried to extort money from them on the pretext of checking tickets.

They told the constable that they had tickets of general compartment but were sitting in the sleeper compartment as they found no vacant seat in the general compartment.

They told the constable that they had paid Rs.50 to another constable who had checked their tickets.

Sharad Chandra Dubey, the accused RPF constable, was arrested on Wednesday and a case under sections 384 (extortion), 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) and 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC has been registered. -- PTI
