Winter fete, car rally to woo tourists to Uttarakhand

December 19, 2013 03:00 am | Updated 03:00 am IST - Dehradun:

To revive tourism in flood-hit Uttarakhand, the State Tourism Department, in collaboration with private and government agencies, has proposed a winter festival at Mussoorie and a car rally from Dehradun.

Tourism Minister Amrita Rawat said, “During the mid-June deluge, the picture that was sent out to the world was that of a devastated Uttarakhand. The truth is that the State has 13 districts of which five were hit by floods. We want to send a message that the State is ready to accept tourists.”

Uttarakhand Paryatan Vikas Parishad, in collaboration with the Himalayan Motorsport Association, is organising Uttarakhand Adventure Car Rally 2013, which will cover almost 1,000 km. The event will be flagged off from Dehradun on December 21.

Thirty-five teams with two people in each team will participate in the event from December 21 to 24.

The rally will pass through Auli, Haridwar, Ramnagar, Rishikesh, Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Karnaprayag.

Mussoorie Winterline Carnival 2013 will be organised from December 27 to 30.

Mountain biking, cycling, rock climbing, cultural performances, a fashion show by the Ministry of Textiles, performances by percussionist A. Sivamani, sitarist Ravi Chary and pianist Stephen Devassy, a play by actor Tom Alter, an interaction over tea with Mussoorie-based children’s writer Ruskin Bond, a Vintage Car Rally, and performances by Bollywood playback singers are among the attractions of the event.
