‘Vyapam should be probed by neutral, capable authority’

It amounts to cold-blooded murders, says Mamata

July 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - Bolpur (WB):

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said that she was in favour of a probe by a neutral and capable agency into the Vyampam scam.

Reacting to the scandal that has caused a national outcry, she told reporters here that it was a matter of concern as it amounted to “cold-blooded murders”.

Asked whether a CBI probe would be appropriate, she said: “Why only CBI? I have respect for all agencies. And even the CBI has not been able to solve all cases. What I want is probe by a neutral and capable authority.”

The Trinamool Congress chief had yesterday said that her party would raise the scam in Parliament during the coming monsoon session and had demanded a Supreme Court-monitored probe.

“The Trinamool Congress will raise its voice against Vyapam scam in Parliament. I strongly condemn the incident. It should be investigated under the monitoring of the Supreme Court,” Ms. Banerjee had said in Kolkata yesterday reacting to the scandal that has caused a national outrage. - PTI

Asserting that she wants peace in Birbhum, Ms. Banerjee said that she would not allow “muscle power” to control villages in the State.

“One political party, I don’t want to name them, is hiring goons from outside and bringing arms into the district. It will not be tolerated. We want peace in Birbhum,” she said replying to questions by journalists at Bolpur.

Clashes between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Trinamool Congress have been reported in certain parts of Birbhum over past few months.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister also defended her Government’s decision to bring non-bailable charges against a woman in Sattor village who had earlier accused of police harassment.

“No one has the right to take law into his or her hands. She must have done something, else why would she be arrested? Law will take its course,” Ms Banerjee who was attending an administrative meeting in the district said. While the police claimed that the woman possessed crude bombs, she said how could she have bombs with her when the police were posted outside her house.

“The party will raise the issue in Parliament in the monsoon session”
