The viscera of a key Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) witness privy to the assault on the father of the Unnao rape survivor were on Sunday sent for chemical analysis after an autopsy failed to ascertain the cause of his death, officials said.

Amid opposition by his family, the body of Yunus Khan was exhumed late on Saturday night by the Unnao administration, days after the uncle of the rape survivor wrote to the CBI and the police alleging foul play in his death. While pointing out that the body was buried by Yunus’ family in a hurried fashion without informing the police, he demanded that it be exhumed for autopsy, alleging that Yunus was murdered as a part of a “conspiracy” by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar.

The MLA is in jail facing charges of raping the minor.

Yunus died on August 18. As per the post-mortem report, no ante-mortem injuries were present on his body. “Cause of death could not be ascertained, hence viscera preserved for chemical and histopathological analysis,” the autopsy report said, adding that the DNA was also preserved. Yusuf’s family maintains that he died of a liver disease.
