The BJP Legislature Party in Rajasthan unanimously elected the party’s State president Vasundhara Raje as its leader here on Monday, paving the way for her appointment as the State’s next Chief Minister. Ms. Raje is likely to stake the claim for formation of government on Tuesday and take oath on Friday.

All the 162 newly-elected legislators, as well as some Independents, were invited to attend the Legislature Party meeting at the State headquarters here. Senior party leader Gulab Chand Kataria proposed Ms. Raje’s name, which was unanimously approved by all the MLAs.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley announced Ms. Raje’s election as the leader of Legislature Party at the end of the brief meeting. BJP national general secretary Amit Shah, a close confidant of prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, was a special invitee at the meeting.

In a related development, Governor Margaret Alva dissolved the 13th State Assembly and issued notification for the constitution of the 14th Assembly, in which the BJP enjoys more than three-fourth majority.

Mr. Jaitley, meanwhile, said the new government’s policies should be proportionate with the majority enjoyed by the party in the House. “Lakhs of party workers have worked hard to ensure our success. People have immense expectations from us. Our policies and programmes should be commensurate with our majority in the House.”

Addressing the meeting, Ms. Raje said the landslide for the BJP was “just a test for our party cadre.” “The real examination is coming closer. We have to redefine the nation in 2014 by winning all the 25 Lok Sabha seats [in Rajasthan] as our contribution to make Narendra Modi the next Prime Minister.”

A large number of people, including senior administrative and police officers, and party supporters met Ms. Raje at her Civil Lines residence here during the day.
