Unrest in Faizabad over alleged police inaction

Mob torched police outpost, roadside shops, vehicles and staged road roko

Days after a young woman was allegedly gang-raped and murdered here, the situation turned ugly on Tuesday.

A rampaging mob torched a police outpost and set afire some roadside kiosks and vehicles in the Khandasa area near Faizabad district’s Amaniganj town. Police were forced to use force after the crowd also staged a road jam in Bahadurganj along the Faizabad–Rae Bareli highway and pelted stones.

Three persons have been arrested. Heavy police cover has been deployed in Khandasa and Amaniganj.

The protests, reportedly led by some Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, were staged against alleged police inaction.

On Saturday, the victim, a 20-year-old school teacher, was found gravely injured on a roadside in Safdarganj, in neighbouring Barabanki district. She was taken to the Trauma Centre of King George’s Medical University here, where she died on Sunday.

Final rites performed

In her dying declaration, she named one Nadeem, the owner of a mobile phone store in Amaniganj, and alleged that he had kidnapped her. Her final rites were performed under heavy security on Sunday.

While Nadeem was arrested, the police have been accused of sheltering his alleged accomplice.

According to IG (Special Task Force) Sujit Pandey, the protesters believed five persons to have been involved in the crime. He said the police was yet to receive the deceased’s autopsy report.
