Two sisters killed in bomb explosion

Two sisters belonging to the Zeliangrong tribe were killed when a powerful bomb exploded in Noney district of Manipur on Friday morning. The two were climbing a mountain near their Leisok village, 15 km from the Khoupum police station, when the incident took place.

Though Noney district has some extremist groups, no organisation has so far claimed responsibility for the bomb explosion, the police said.

Akhiuna Kamei (18), a Class X student of Don Bosco School at Khoupum, was killed on the spot. Her younger sister, Gaikhonliu Kamei (15), succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital. Their mother was also wounded and has been hospitalised.

It is not clear who buried the World War II-like bomb near the road used by Leisok villagers to go for cultivation work, the police said, adding that a case has been registered and investigations are on.
