Two youths were found dead in the city’s Dhankawadi locality on Thursday allegedly after a pest control treatment of their room, police sources said.

According to the Bharati Vidyapeeth police, the deceased identified as Ananta Khedkar and Raju Beldar (both in their early 20s), worked in the city-based PICT college canteen.

Khedkar and Beldar, residents of Buldhana and Jalgaon districts respectively, lived in a room near the college, given to them by the canteen manager.

A pest control treatment of their room was carried out a couple of days ago after they complained of bed bugs.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that the deaths may have been caused by inhaling the pesticide lingering in the air after the pest control operation. Both of them had spent the night at a friend’s place at the time of the pest control and returned to their room a day later on Wednesday night,” said Police Inspector Vishnu Pawar of the Bharati Vidyapeeth police station.

When they failed to show up at work on Thursday morning, the canteen manager looked into their room and found them still in bed.

“When they did not respond to calls, he broke open the door. On finding them lifeless, he rushed the two to a nearby hospital where they were declared dead,” said Mr. Pawar.
