Two arrested for abduction and gang rape in Jharkhand

Four men in their early 20s who are enrolled in different colleges in Hazaribagh, 100 km from Ranchi, abducted and gang-raped a 15-year old girl, student of class XI, at the house of a Kolkata businessman and former Rajya Sabha MP between Monday and Wednesday.

The police have arrested two of the four accused Sonu Kumar and Nitesh Kumar. Two of the other accused, Dhanu Ram - whose father is a Deputy Superintendent of Police, CID, Ranchi - and Anurag Kumar are absconding. Dhanu Ram had recently come out of Hazaribagh jail on bail after being arrested for a robbery, said police officials.

The men, who live in the same neighbourhood as the girl, had abducted her on Monday and gang-raped her and kept her confined till Wednesday night when they allowed her to return to her parent’s house. The police registered a FIR and made two arrests on Thursday night after the girl reported the incident to her parents on Thursday morning.

The Supreme Court had in an order in January said that all reports of all missing children be noted as FIR. In July, the Union Home Ministry had ordered all state governments to comply strictly with this SC order.

“We did not register a FIR earlier about the missing girl on Monday but sent a message to all police stations on the wireless when the girl’s father reported her missing. We will ensure the other two accused are arrested as well. We are searching for the housekeeper as he is absconding as well,” said Hazaribagh Superintendent of Police Manoj Kaushik.

The girl is a student in a government girls’ school and her father owns a cattle-shed in Hazaribagh.
